Dental Technology

Our patient’s needs in dentistry are constantly changing, and so does the necessary technology. Lyons Dental in Centerville is always watching for emerging and new technologies, so our patient’s experience can be as comfortable as possible.  Here are just a few different technologies which Lyons Dental uses to make sure we give world class service to all our patients:

Digital X-Rays/Pano – are quicker and comprise less radiation than conventional X-rays.  Previously, a patient would have to wait for 10-15 minutes for final X-ray results. Now, with Digital X-Rays/Pano, the image appears on the computer screen within a matter of seconds. Dr. John-Varghese can then better assess and instruct the patient regarding their oral health by zooming into the image right there.  Digital X-rays contain up to 90% less radiation in contrast to traditional X-rays and therefore are less harmful.

Intraoral Camera—Sometimes it is difficult to see certain areas within the oral cavity. The intraoral camera helps Dr. John-Varghese gain exact and well-defined pictures of the patient’s mouth.  The camera also allows dentist to display these images to patients while assessing and teaching the patient. This new sort of technology enables the dentist to run a thorough checkup of your own mouth and better assess their patient’s dental care needs.

CadCam Technology—CAD/ CAM stands for computer-aided layout & computer-aided manufacturing.  CAD/CAM applications are utilized to design and manufacture prototypes, finished goods, and production runs.  An example of this could be the usage of CEREC, software and production process used to make crowns in-house, without the patient having to wait days.  The software takes 3D images of the tooth which needs the crown and generates that crown by means of a laser cutting process.  The crown is then installed during that same visit.

Florida Probe – The software used at Lions dental diagnosing and detecting periodontal disease is called the Florida Probe. This is no ordinary periodontal probe. Periodontal pockets are able to be measured more quickly by dental hygienists and more accurately with a constant force, computerized probe. Bringing the blue sleeve on the Florida Handpiece down to the gingival margin, gives a lot more accuracy to oral cavity readings. This is much more accurate than trying to read the 1mm bands on a manual probe and estimate the pocket depth. All the dental hygienist has to do is bringing the handpiece down to the gingival margin, tap the foot-switch and all the important data is recorded. No assistant is needed to write down numbers and there is no guessing.

Laser Dentistry – To improve efficiency and eliminate discomfort in a number of dental procedures, including removing decay, reducing tooth sensitivity, eliminating lesions, treatment of periodontal disease and whitening, lasers are often used. Laser dentistry can eliminate any form of bacteria, is fast and painless, and is able to avoid further complications or problems. It is a highly specialized procedure in which Dr. John-Varghese and trained dental Hygienist of Lyons Dental have been trained.

Zoom WhiteningPatients today enjoy the availability to have their teeth whitened close to their original color. An innovative whitening treatment that brings fast and easy results is called Zoom! Whitening. Lyons Dental uses this whitening procedure to bring about a significant change in a person’s smile. In one sitting a patient’s teeth can be changed up to 8 shades whiter.

DIAGNOdent – A new, high tech device Dr. John-Varghese and Lyons dental is using to detect cavities that regular X Rays have difficulty finding, is called DIAGNOdent. One of the major issues with oral hygiene today is the inability to always find a cavity through conventional means. When a cavity is not found, it has the ability to continue to grow and cause more issues than if it had been found and treated when it was small. The use of this device helps patients avoid having to spend more time in the future taking care of the cavities that have progressed and expanded.

InvisalignDr. John-Varghese has the ability to provide practically invisible braces called Invisalign. These clear braces get the job done in less time and with less hassle. Your smile can be strengthened without wearing heavy metal braces and straightens your teeth in a gentle way without having restrictions on what type of food to eat. they are easily removed, easy to clean, and a lot more aesthetic than traditional braces.

Nitrous OxideThis odorless gas, sometimes called laughing gas, can help calm a patient down, so they are relaxed but are still able to interact with the dentist and hygienist. Patients who are fearful of going to the dentist are often able to use this method so their procedures are completed without stress and anxiety. Dr. John-Varghese Is specially trained for the use of this mild anesthetic.

How Do I know What Type of Dentistry is Right For Me?

Making a decision concerning something that defines who you are to many the first time they see you can be intimidating and confusing. Dr. John-Varghese will walk you step by step through the decision process helping you understand every aspect.

CEREC Crowns or Just a Filling
Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramic or CEREC® for short is a new state-of-the-art method of reconstructing tooth restorations. This new technology has revolutionized ceramic restorations such as crowns and veneers for patients so that there is no longer a wait between preparing the restoration and finally receiving the finished product.
Dental Sealant or General Cleaning
Sealants are thin layers of resin that are placed on the pits, fissures, and grooves of molars to prevent decay on these surfaces. The majority of decay on back teeth starts in the grooves and pits of chewing surfaces, especially during the first few years after their eruption. Sealing these surfaces with composite resins prevents this kind of decay.
Zoom Teeth Whitening
The procedure is simple. It begins with short preparation to cover your lips and gums, leaving only your teeth exposed.
We then apply the proprietary Zoom! whitening gel, which is designed to be used specifically with the Zoom! light. The light and gel work together to gently penetrate your teeth, breaking up any stains and discoloration.

  • During this time you can relax.
  • The gel is applied for 3-4 fifteen minute sessions, for a total treatment time of 45-60 minutes.
  • Finally, you go home with your brighter, whiter smile. We also provide you with touch-up trays so you can maintain your new smile.
Dental Implant Restoration
During the last 20 years, dental implants have become a desirable alternative to other methods of replacing missing teeth. Excellent success rates and a range of available options give dentists a variety of new ways to treat and replace lost teeth.

Your dentist can evaluate your case and tell you if you are a candidate for dental implants. Structurally, a dental implant is a titanium-based cylinder that replaces the missing tooth root. After a period of time, other parts are placed on the implant to enable your dentist to eventually place a crown (cap) on the implant. Implants can also be used to support full or partial dentures, dramatically improving denture retention and stability.

Veneers and Laminates

Veneers and Laminates are a thin shell of porcelain or resin that is bonded to the surface of the teeth. This can change their shape, shade, and position to improve the cosmetics of your teeth and smile. They are also used to replace and restore any lost tooth structure where indicated.

Your dentist will do a complete examination of your teeth to determine if veneers are ideal for you. Veneers often provide the opportunity to dramatically transform the aesthetics of your teeth and smile.
